Every Picture Tells a Story

Whatever you are publishing online — whether it’s a blog post, a web page, an advertisement, or any other type of content — you need to include some sort of image to go along with it.

Photos, drawings, graphics, and other types of visual content serve several important purposes. First, they break up your content so that readers aren’t facing huge blocks of visually unappealing grey text. Second, they offer something unique and interesting to look at besides your text copy.

Third, ideally they illustrate or complement your content so that it has more value to your page visitor.

You want to choose the best images possible that serve your content optimally. But you have to be careful which images you choose. Photos, graphics, and other images that are copyright protected or even just created by somebody else typically can’t be used without permission. In some instance, you will need to pay a royalty to the author of the image before you can legally reproduce it on your web page.

The best solution is simply to use images you create entirely yourself. These can include photos that you have taken, drawings that you created, or graphics you built online using a computer program.

Another option is to use images whose creators have already delegated them to be in the public domain. A Google search of public domain images related to the subject you want to portray can lead you to the image you want. Just make sure it is documented that they are authorized to be used for free by anybody.

Wikimedia Commons offers thousands of images that can be used for free. It’s an open source site run by the same people that run Wikimedia.

Including an image on all the content you post online can help attract readers and keep them interacting with your content longer. Just make sure to use authorized images.
